Cluj is both the historic and in effect the present capital of Transilvania. Transilvania (or Transylvaia as it is sometimes incorrectly spelt) is a large region spreading from dynamic Brasov to the south; incorporating the historical and cultural Saxon cities of Sigishoara and Sibiu; spreading west to the Hungarian border; and north to the mystical and almost pagan region of Maramures which borders the Ukraine.
Cluj Napoca as a city has plans to become a metropolitan area by including within its bondaries 18 communes (Districts) giving it a geographical spread of approximately 40 kilometers east to west and north to south.
This administrative development will alone take Cluj's population to over half a million people thereby attracting a significantly higher level of European funding. Coupled with economic growth it has been speculated that the metropolitan population will swell to 2 million inhabitants within the next 10 - 12 years. Add to this the potential for growth of neighbouring cities and twons - Dej, Turda, Campia Turzii and Huedin - and you have a major conurbation in the heart of Europe.
